Introduce striking colour and culinary versatility to your kitchen garden with an eye-catching heritage variety.

A unique and highly adaptable hardy selection belonging to the traditional Allium family. This dual-purpose variety offers the best of both worlds: pull them young for crisp, beautifully tinted salad onions, or allow them to grow on to mature into full-sized, deep crimson bulbing onions.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Allium cepa, a highly prized and versatile heirloom onion variety.
  • Intensifying Red Colourway: Features a beautiful, deep purplish-red skin that darkens and intensifies in colour as the plant matures, creating a stunning visual contrast on the plate.
  • Crisp and Mild Flavour: Delivers a wonderfully mild, sweet taste and a crunchy texture, making it equally delicious when eaten raw or cooked.
  • Dual-Purpose Versatility: Harvest early in the season to use as a vibrant spring onion, or leave them in the ground to develop into small, high-quality salad bulbs for late summer.
  • Zero-Waste Culinary Appeal: Both the colourful, crisp flesh of the base and the upright, hollow green tops can be sliced into fresh summer salads, stir-fries, and gourmet garnishes.
  • Excellent Companion Crop: Grows with a neat, space-saving vertical habit that fits perfectly into traditional vegetable rows, raised beds, or mixed container displays.

Care Instructions:

  • Sow seeds directly outdoors in shallow drills 1.5cm deep into finely prepared, well-drained soil from early spring through to mid-summer.
  • For use as traditional spring onions, sow thinly and harvest when the stems are pencil-thick; for mature bulbs, thin the young seedlings to 5cm to 10cm apart.
  • Water regularly during dry, hot periods to promote steady, rapid growth, keeping the flesh succulent, tender, and mild in flavour.
