A fast-growing, year-round gourmet salad leaf delivering a delicious, fiery, watercress-style crunch.
Introduce a continuous supply of tangy, peppery greens to your kitchen with this exceptionally hardy and effortless salad crop. Serving as the ultimate, low-maintenance alternative to traditional watercress, American Land Cress requires no running water to thrive, matures at lightning speed, and crops reliably in both open ground and space-saving patio containers.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Barbarea verna, a premium, cold-hardy and high-yielding selection within the peppery leaf family.
- Plant Class: Hardy Biennial (grown as an annual leaf crop), establishing with exceptional speed from spring through to autumn for near-continuous picking.
- Fiery Peppery Flavour: Yields deeply divided, glossy green leaves that pack a robust, punchy, and spicy kick that matches the exact gourmet flavour profile of true wild watercress.
- Fast-Growing & Quick to Crop: Exceptionally rapid from seed to plate; young, tender baby leaves can be harvested just a few weeks after sowing, followed by substantial repeat pickings.
- Grows Without Running Water: Unlike standard watercress which demands complex, clean running water systems, American Land Cress grows effortlessly in ordinary, moist garden soil.
- Exceptional Winter Hardiness: Remarkably resilient against cold winter weather; late summer and autumn sowings will continuously provide fresh, vitamin-rich green pickings right through the coldest months of the year when other salad crops fade.
- Patio and Container Expert: Due to its neat, low-growing rosettes and shallow root system, it is a premier candidate for window boxes, small salad troughs, or mixed patio containers on a kitchen balcony.
- Kitchen Versatility: Adds a sophisticated, zesty depth to fresh summer salads, makes a magnificent peppery addition to egg and steak sandwiches, or can be wilted down into gourmet winter soups and stir-fries.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: Sow seeds thinly directly outdoors from March to September into finely raked, weed-free, and moisture-retentive soil. Can be grown successfully in partial shade or full sun. For a non-stop, year-round supply, sow small successional pinches of seed every 2 to 3 weeks.
- Thinning & Spacing: For harvesting as a tender baby leaf crop, little to no thinning is required. For mature, full-sized rosettes, thin the emerged seedlings gradually to roughly 10–15cm apart.
- Maintenance: To keep the leaves beautifully tender and prevent the plants from bolting (running to seed prematurely) during hot summer spells, keep the soil consistently moist by watering regularly and deeply.
- Harvesting Tip: Pick the outer leaves continuously as required, leaving the central crown intact to encourage the plant to relentlessly push out fresh, vigorous new growth.
