An award-winning, winter-hardy spring onion engineered to deliver crisp, disease-resistant stems over an extended harvesting window.
Introduce professional-grade reliability to your kitchen garden with this premium F1 selection, produced by Mr Fothergill’s Seeds in proud partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Honoured with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its absolute dependability and superior field performance, Matrix is exceptionally slow to form bulbs. It stands as the definitive choice for home growers seeking a steady, long-lasting supply of pungent, tender salad onions that withstand the coldest British weather.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Allium cepa 'Matrix', a highly refined, premium-grade cultivar within the versatile allium family.
- Plant Class: Hardy Biennial grown as an annual, establishing with exceptional seedling vigour to produce uniform, upright green shoots.
- Outstanding Winter Hardiness: Features robust, frost-tolerant genetics, making it a great choice if you want to sow in autumn for a reliable crop of fresh winter and early spring greens.
- Advanced Bolt and Bulb Resistance: Expertly bred to be exceptionally slow to form bulbs, which keeps the long, succulent white shanks and green tops in prime, usable condition for much longer.
- Robust Disease Resistance: Possesses excellent natural defences against common garden pathogens, ensuring the structural stems remain clean, healthy, and visually appealing in the ground.
- Versatile Kitchen Staple: Packed with a crisp texture and a sweet, mildly hot flavour, it is perfect for tossing fresh into summer salads, scattering over Asian stir-fries, or stirring into warming winter soups.
- Nutritional Value: A highly rewarding, health-boosting crop to cultivate at home, serving as an excellent natural source of dietary fibre, Vitamin C, and essential antioxidants.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: Choose a clean, weed-free location with fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, raking the ground thoroughly to a fine, crumbly tilth before planting.
- Successional Sowing Method: For a non-stop, continuous summer and autumn supply, sow small batches every 2 to 3 weeks from March through to July, or sow in August and September to harvest the following spring. Sow seeds thinly directly into shallow rows 1.5cm deep, spacing the rows 15cm apart.
- Moisture and Thinning: Keep the soil consistently and evenly moist during dry spells to ensure tender, juicy growth. Thinning is generally unnecessary if seeds are sown thinly, but any removed young seedlings can be used directly in the kitchen.
- Harvesting Protocol: Pull the spring onions carefully by the base of the stems as required once they reach the thickness of a pencil, leaving the remaining plants extra space to fill out cleanly.
