An award-winning, early-maturing bush variety engineered to deliver prolific yields of striped marrows with exceptional virus resistance.

Introduce reliable heritage quality to your kitchen garden with this high-performance F1 hybrid, produced by Mr Fothergill’s Seeds in proud partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Honoured with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its absolute reliability and superior field performance, Tiger Cross F1 is a fast-growing selection designed to maximize food output in limited spaces. It stands as the definitive choice for home growers seeking a steady, dependable harvest of tender, full-flavoured summer vegetables.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Cucurbita pepo 'Tiger Cross F1', a premium, highly uniform hybrid cultivar within the squash family.
  • Plant Class: Half-Hardy Annual, possessing superior hybrid vigour that ensures rapid germination, robust root systems, and early fruit development.
  • Compact Bush Growth Habit: Naturally forms a tidy, non-invasive bush framework rather than a sprawling vine, making it an elite selection for smaller kitchen gardens, raised allotment beds, or intensive vegetable plots.
  • Advanced Virus Resistance: Bred with robust modern genetics to feature excellent natural tolerance against Cucumber Mosaic Virus, ensuring the plants remain healthy, clean, and highly productive over a long season.
  • Prolific Fruit Production: Bears a high-yielding abundance of classic, attractively striped marrows packed with a firm texture and a sweet, mild flavour that far surpasses standard supermarket alternatives.
  • Early Maturing Fruits: Establishes rapidly in spring to begin developing usable marrow fruit significantly earlier than traditional heritage varieties, helping you beat the summer hunger gap.
  • Gourmet Culinary Utility: Highly versatile in the kitchen, making it a great choice for slicing into hearty autumn bakes, stuffing with seasoned minced meat, or roasting with Mediterranean herbs and olive oil.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Choose a sheltered location with rich, moisture-retentive, and well-drained soil in full sun, raking the ground thoroughly before planting to ensure optimum seed establishment.
  • Sowing Method: For a reliable summer and autumn crop, sow seeds individually on their sides indoors in deep pots from April to May, or sow directly outdoors into rich soil from May to June once all danger of frost has passed. Sow seeds at a depth of 1.5cm.
  • Planting Out and Spacing: Transplant young indoor-raised seedlings to their final outdoor positions from late May to June, allowing a generous 90cm between individual plants to accommodate the bushy, productive framework.
  • Moisture and Harvesting: Keep the soil consistently moist by watering deeply around the base of the plant, avoiding the foliage to prevent mildew. Harvest the marrows regularly using a sharp knife when they reach the desired culinary size, as frequent picking encourages the plant to produce a non-stop flush of fresh fruit until the autumn frosts.
