An award-winning, exceptionally hardy Nantes variety engineered for year-round cultivation and extended winter harvest.

Cultivate a premium kitchen garden staple with this high-performance F1 hybrid, produced by Mr Fothergill’s Seeds in proud partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Celebrated for its remarkable cold tolerance and field stamina, Marion F1 holds its crisp texture and sweet flavour in the ground for several months without splitting. It stands as the definitive choice for home growers seeking a reliable, continuous supply of sweet, smooth carrots through the autumn and winter months.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Daucus carota 'Marion F1', a highly refined, premium hybrid cultivar within the popular Nantes carrot group.
  • Plant Class: Hardy Annual, possessing superior hybrid vigour that ensures uniform root development and excellent early seedling establishment.
  • Year-Round Growing Versatility: Expertly bred for all-season performance, making it a great choice if you want to stagger your sowings for consistent, multi-season kitchen harvesting.
  • Exceptional Over-Wintering Stamina: Features a hard-wearing, frost-tolerant nature that allows the mature roots to overwinter safely in the ground in all but the coldest regions, eliminating the need for immediate autumn lifting.
  • Sweet and Smooth Roots: Produces beautifully uniform, cylindrical orange roots with a smooth skin, fine core, and high natural sugar content for a rich, sweet flavour that far surpasses standard supermarket varieties.
  • Highly Adaptable Growing Habit: Thrives across an impressive range of garden settings, offering excellent planting flexibility in full sun, dappled shade, partial shade, or full shade.
  • Nutritional Value: A highly rewarding, health-boosting crop to cultivate at home, serving as a fantastic natural source of beta-carotene, dietary fibre, and essential vitamins.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: For a steady, continuous supply of sweet carrots, sow small successional batches every 2 to 3 weeks from March through to July. Sow seeds thinly directly into finely raked, stone-free, and well-drained soil 1cm deep, in rows spaced 30cm apart.
  • Carrot Fly Prevention: To deter the common carrot root fly, sow seeds thinly to minimize the need for thinning later, as the scent of crushed foliage attracts the pest. Alternatively, cover the entire bed with a fine insect mesh immediately after sowing.
  • Moisture and Maintenance: Keep the soil consistently and evenly moist during dry summer spells, as a steady supply of water prevents the developing roots from splitting and ensures a juicy, tender texture. Keep rows well-weeded to reduce competition for nutrients.
  • Winter Protection and Harvesting: Pull alternative roots early to enjoy as tender baby carrots, leaving the remainder to grow to full maturity. In severe winter regions, apply a thick layer of straw mulch over the rows in late autumn to protect the crowns and keep the soil workable for easy lifting during freezing weather.
