An award-winning winter selection combining the exceptional frost hardiness of a Savoy with the crisp texture of a white ball-head cabbage.
Cultivate the gold standard of cold-weather brassicas with this high-performance F1 hybrid, produced by Mr Fothergill’s Seeds in proud partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Honoured with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its absolute reliability and outstanding field performance, Tundra F1 is engineered to withstand the harshest British winters. It is the definitive choice for a consistent, heavy harvest of sweet, crinkled winter greens from autumn through to late spring.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Brassica oleracea var. capitata 'Tundra F1', an elite, highly uniform hybrid cultivar that sets the modern benchmark for winter cabbage quality.
- Plant Class: Hardy Annual, possessing superior hybrid vigour for dependable germination, robust root systems, and exceptional cold-weather stamina.
- Premium Hybrid Cross: Masterfully bred to blend the crinkled, frost-tolerant outer leaves of a traditional Savoy cabbage with the dense, crisp-hearted, and full-flavoured interior of a classic white ball-head type.
- Exceptional Winter Standing: Highly resilient against severe frost, snow, and ice, allowing the mature cabbages to stand firmly in the frozen ground for months without rotting or losing their sweet flavour.
- Generous Yields of Dense Heads: Produces tightly packed, heavy green heads with a sweet, mild flavour that completely eliminates the bitter notes often found in older winter varieties.
- Versatile Culinary Essential: Packed with vitamins and texturally crisp, making it a versatile kitchen choice that holds its structure perfectly, whether shredded into winter stir-fries, steamed with butter, or braised in traditional Sunday roasts.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: For a reliable winter and spring crop, sow seeds thinly indoors in modules or directly outdoors into a finely raked, weed-free seedbed from April to June. Sow seeds at a depth of 1.5cm in a position with full sun.
- Planting Out and Spacing: Transplant young seedlings to their final outdoor plot from May to July once they have developed 4 to 5 true leaves. Space individual plants 45cm apart, allowing 45cm between rows, to ensure the heavy heads have adequate room to swell cleanly.
- Firm Soil Requirement: Thoroughly firm the ground around the base of each stem by treading lightly after transplanting, as cabbages require a solid, stable root anchor to prevent winter winds from rocking the crop.
- Pest Protection: Keep the soil consistently moist during dry summer spells to encourage continuous leaf production. Cover the plot with a fine insect netting immediately after planting out to protect the developing crop from birds and cabbage white butterflies.
