A strong, frost-hardy hybrid variety delivering high yields of sweet and remarkably solid buttons.
Experience the satisfaction of growing your own traditional winter produce with this exceptional variety, produced by Mr Fothergill’s Seeds in proud partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Specifically selected for its robust performance, this hybrid establishes into a vigorous, reliable plant that stands exceptionally well in the ground. It is a great choice if you are looking to secure a heavy harvest of premium-quality, mid-green sprouts throughout the colder months.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera, a highly refined hybrid selection within the Brussels sprout family.
- Plant Class: Hardy Annual, possessing excellent hybrid vigour to ensure reliable germination and strong, uniform stem development.
- High-Yielding Sweet Buttons: Bears a prolific abundance of tightly packed, mid-green buttons that are remarkably solid and crisp, offering an exceptionally sweet flavor that improves after the winter frosts.
- Excellent Frost Resistance: Features outstanding natural hardiness, allowing the mature plants to stand firmly in the ground during freezing winter weather for a fresh, staggered harvest.
- All Soil Compatibility: Adaptable and versatile, this resilient variety is suitable for all soil types, making it easy to establish in any garden border or allotment plot.
- Versatile Growing Position: Thrives across a remarkable variety of garden settings, offering excellent growing flexibility in full sun, dappled shade, partial shade, or full shade.
- Nutritional Value: A highly rewarding, health-boosting winter crop for home growers, serving as an excellent natural source of dietary fibre, Vitamin C, and essential nutrients.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: For a reliable winter crop, sow seeds thinly indoors in modules from March to April, or sow directly outdoors into a finely raked, weed-free seedbed from April to May. Sow seeds 1.5cm deep.
- Planting Out and Spacing: Transplant young seedlings to their final outdoor positions from May to July once they reach roughly 10-15cm tall. Space individual plants 60cm apart, allowing 60cm between rows, and firm the surrounding soil down thoroughly by treading to prevent the tall stems from rocking in the wind.
- Moisture and Support: Keep the soil consistently moist during dry summer spells to encourage steady growth. As the plants mature and grow top-heavy with buttons, drawing soil up around the base of the stems or providing sturdy stakes is highly recommended for added stability during winter storms.
- Harvesting Tip: Always harvest the buttons from the bottom of the stem upwards as they fill out, twisting them off cleanly. Removing the sprouts gradually encourages the remaining top buttons to swell uniformly.
