A high-performance summer sprouting variety producing rich purple stems and heads with an exceptional texture.

Bring a touch of gourmet culinary color to your kitchen garden with this advanced F1 hybrid, produced by Mr Fothergill’s Seeds in proud partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Specifically selected for its reliable garden performance, Tyrian F1 breaks away from traditional green types to offer sweet, tender spears throughout the summer months. It is the definitive choice for home growers seeking a nutrient-dense, heavy-cropping vegetable that excels in full sun.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Brassica oleracea var. italica 'Tyrian F1', a premium, highly uniform hybrid cultivar within the Brassica genus.
  • Plant Class: Hardy Annual, possessing excellent hybrid vigour for reliable establishment and a long, productive harvesting window.
  • Vibrant Purple Stems and Heads: Bears a prolific abundance of deep purple spears and heads, creating a striking contrast against traditional allotment greens.
  • Exceptional Flavor and Texture: Packed with a sweet, refined flavor and a tender, crisp crunch, making it far more succulent than standard supermarket varieties.
  • Versatile Kitchen Staple: Highly adaptable for home cooking, this nutritious variety can be boiled, stir-fried, or lightly steamed to retain its distinctive, dark colouration and health-boosting vitamins.
  • Trial-Winning Performance: Extensively tested and recognized as an excellent performer in rigorous garden trials, ensuring high pest resilience and uniform development.
  • Optimal Growing Position: Thrives at its absolute best when planted in full sun, growing robustly in fertile, firm, and well-drained soil.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: For a reliable summer and autumn crop, sow seeds thinly indoors in modules from March to April, or sow directly outdoors into a finely raked seedbed from April to June. Sow seeds 1.5cm deep.
  • Planting Out and Spacing: Transplant indoor-raised seedlings to their final outdoor positions from May to July once they have developed 4 to 5 true leaves. Space individual plants 45cm apart, allowing 45cm between rows, and firm the surrounding soil down thoroughly to support the heavy, upright framework.
  • Moisture Control: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry summer spells, as regular watering encourages continuous spear production and prevents the plants from bolting prematurely.
  • Harvesting Tip: Harvest the central primary head first to stimulate the plant into pushing out a heavy secondary flush of succulent, bite-sized side shoots. Cut the spears regularly while the flower buds are tight and completely unopened.
