An elite British-bred hybrid delivering an incredibly sweet flavor and perfectly smooth, ring-free roots.

Cultivate a true masterpiece of modern plant breeding with this exceptional F1 hybrid, produced by Mr Fothergill’s Seeds in proud partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society. Specifically engineered for speed, uniform growth, and outstanding quality, Action F1 stands as one of the absolute sweetest beetroots you can grow. It is the definitive choice for small gardens, allotments, or deep patio containers.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Beta vulgaris 'Action F1', a premium, highly refined British-bred hybrid cultivar within the Beetroot family.
  • Plant Class: Hardy Annual, possessing superior hybrid vigour for lightning-fast germination and rapid, even root development.
  • The Sweetest Flavor Profile: Bears an abundance of perfectly smooth, globe-shaped roots. The deep crimson flesh is remarkably tender, completely free from woody rings, and packed with high natural sugars, delivering a rich, sweet, and gourmet taste.
  • Flexible Dual Harvests: Highly versatile in the kitchen; harvest the roots early when they reach golf-ball size for ultra-tender, melt-in-the-mouth baby beets, or allow them to reach full maturity as large, heavy globe roots that retain their sweet, succulent texture beautifully.
  • Edible Salad Greens: A fantastic dual-purpose crop; the young, red-veined green leaves can be picked early and used exactly like spinach as a highly decorative, nutrient-dense addition to fresh summer salads.
  • Compact Space-Saving Habit: Naturally forms a neat, upright, clump-forming framework with a controlled spread of just 30cm. Its tidy, non-invasive growth habit makes it an elite selection for raised beds, allotment borders, or deep patio tubs.
  • Exceptional Bolt Resistance: Bred with advanced genetics to feature a high natural resistance to bolting (running to seed prematurely). This added stamina makes it incredibly reliable for early spring sowings when unexpected temperature drops can stress lesser varieties.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: For a steady, non-stop supply of sweet beets all season long, sow small successional batches every 2 to 3 weeks from March through to July. Sow seeds thinly directly into finely raked, weed-free, and well-drained soil 2cm deep, in rows spaced 30cm apart. Position in full sun.
  • Thinning Out: Although an F1 hybrid, beetroot seeds naturally form small clusters that can produce more than one seedling. Once the young shoots emerge and reach a few centimetres tall, thin them out gradually to a final spacing of 10cm apart to give the globes plenty of room to swell cleanly.
  • Moisture & Maintenance: Keep the soil consistently and evenly moist. Water regularly and deeply during dry summer spells. Providing a steady supply of moisture is the key to preventing the roots from turning woody or tough. Keep the surrounding area well-weeded to reduce competition for nutrients.
  • Harvesting & Storage: Pull alternative roots early to enjoy as premium baby beets, leaving the remainder to grow to full size. Harvest maincrop beets as needed through to October. For winter use, the mature globes can be lifted in late autumn, twisting off the leaves (do not cut them, as this causes the roots to "bleed" color), and stored in boxes of damp sand in a cool, frost-free shed.
