Cultivate a timeless kitchen garden favorite with this lightning-fast, crisp heritage radish.
An old favorite and enduring heirloom variety belonging to the rapid-growing Raphanus sativus family. True to its name, Scarlet Globe is celebrated for its incredible ease of growth and its ability to produce high-quality, peppery round radishes even in poorer garden soils, making it an indispensable staple for allotments, veg plots, and containers alike.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Raphanus sativus, a classic, dependable heritage globe radish.
- Crisp Scarlet Roots: Produces beautifully uniform, globe-shaped roots with a vibrant, skin-bright scarlet jacket and a solid, icy-white interior that delivers a satisfyingly clean crunch.
- Thrives in Poorer Soils: Uniquely resilient and highly adaptable, this robust traditional variety is capable of yielding an excellent, crisp crop where other root vegetables might struggle.
- Perfect 'Marker' Crop: Arguably one of the easiest and fastest-growing vegetables in existence; sow the seeds thinly between the rows of slow-germinating crops like parsnips or carrots to mark the rows and maximize your plot space.
- Zesty, Refreshing Flavour: Packs a classic, refreshing, and mildly peppery bite that provides the perfect zingy lift to summer salads, sandwiches, and cold platters.
- Fast-Turnaround Nutrition: A fantastic, rapid-yield crop for children and beginners to grow, offering a rewarding harvest that acts as an excellent source of health-boosting vitamin C.
Care Instructions:
- Sow seeds directly outdoors every two weeks from early spring through to early autumn for an unbroken, non-stop summer supply. Sow in finely raked soil in drills 1.5cm deep, keeping rows roughly 15cm apart.
- Thin the young seedlings out early to a spacing of 3–5cm to prevent crowding and to ensure the globe-shaped roots have ample room to swell uniformly.
- Water the rows lightly but consistently; keeping the soil evenly moist is essential to ensure rapid growth, which keeps the radishes sweet and crisp while preventing them from turning woody or unpleasantly hot.
