The definitive old-fashioned favorite, delivering crisp, mild, tankard-shaped roots with a distinct white tip.
Bring a timeless allotment classic to your salad bowl with this exceptionally fast-cropping radish. Universally celebrated for its iconic oblong shape and mild, peppery crunch, French Breakfast 3 is a highly reliable performer that goes from seed to harvest in just a few short weeks. It is the perfect fast-turnaround crop for filling gaps in vegetable beds, raised allotments, or patio window boxes.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Raphanus sativus 'French Breakfast 3', a premium, highly refined selection within the Radish family.
- Plant Class: Hardy Annual, engineered by nature for lightning-fast germination and rapid maturity, providing some of the earliest harvests of the spring.
- Iconic Tankard-Shaped Roots: Bears an abundance of attractive, elongated, cylindrical "tankard" roots. The skin boasts a brilliant dual-colour contrast, displaying a vivid scarlet-red body that fades into a clean, crisp white tip.
- Crisp & Mild Gourmet Flavour: Features glistening white interior flesh that is remarkably crisp, solid, and juicy. It delivers a delightfully mild, refreshing, and sweet peppery flavor that is entirely free from the harsh, biting heat found in lesser varieties.
- Fast-Cropping Space Filler: Matures in as little as 3 to 4 weeks from sowing. Because of its compact, shallow root system, it serves as an excellent "intercrop" variety, planted in the spaces between slower-growing vegetables like brassicas, sweetcorn, or parsnips.
- Sensational Salad Staple: The ultimate summer salad companion; delicious when sliced thin into crisp green salads, served whole alongside continental cheeses and cold meats, or enjoyed in the traditional French style—spread with sweet butter and dipped in sea salt.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: For a non-stop, continuous supply of mild radishes all season long, sow small successional batches every 2 weeks from March through to September. Sow seeds thinly directly into finely raked, weed-free, and well-drained soil 1cm (0.5in) deep, in rows spaced 15cm (6in) apart. Position in full sun or partial shade.
- Thinning Out: Once the young seedlings emerge, thin them out gradually to space individual plants roughly 2.5–5cm (1–2in) apart. Proper spacing is essential to allow the elongated tankard roots room to swell cleanly without crowding each other.
- Moisture & Speed Control: The absolute secret to growing perfect, mild radishes is speed. Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Regular, even watering forces the roots to grow rapidly; allowing the soil to dry out completely stresses the plant, causing the roots to turn woody, tough, hollow, and unpleasantly hot.
- Harvesting Tip: Harvest the roots promptly as soon as they reach roughly 5cm in length and are plump and firm to the touch. Do not leave them in the ground too long past maturity, or they will rapidly lose their crispness and become pithy. Pull them fresh as needed, trim the leafy tops, and wash thoroughly before serving.
