Harvest a delightful bounty of perfect, pint-sized pumpkins packed with sweet flesh and snack-ready hull-less seeds.
A highly acclaimed, open-pollinated heirloom variety belonging to the productive Cucurbita pepo genus. Developing on space-saving, compact vines, Baby Bear yields an abundance of beautiful, small-scale orange pumpkins that are highly prized for their deep, sweet culinary flavor and unique "naked" seeds that make the perfect roasted snack.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Cucurbita pepo, a premium, open-pollinated compact vine pumpkin.
- Perfect Child-Sized Portions: Produces beautifully uniform, flat-round fruits weighing roughly 700g to 1kg—the ideal size for little hands to harvest and an excellent portion size for family meals.
- Delicious Succulent Flesh: Features a thick, bright orange wall of fine-grained, sweet, and non-stringy flesh that roasts to perfection and makes a sublime base for smooth autumn soups and pies.
- Edible 'Naked' Seeds: A fantastic zero-waste variety! The seeds inside develop without a tough outer hull, meaning they can be scooped out, lightly toasted with sea salt, and eaten whole as a delicious, highly nutritious snack.
- Space-Saving Compact Vine: Grows on much shorter, more manageable vines than traditional sprawling field pumpkins, making it an absolute must-have for smaller vegetable patches, raised beds, or large patio tubs.
- Long-Lasting Storage Quality: The fruits develop a sturdy, thick, and protective deep-orange skin that gives them an outstanding shelf-life, allowing them to store beautifully for months after harvest.
Care Instructions:
- Sow seeds indoors from mid-to-late spring on their edges 2.5cm deep in individual 9cm pots of moist compost, keeping them warm at 20–25°C for rapid germination.
- Gradually acclimatise the young plants to the outdoors before transplanting them into rich, well-manured soil in a sunny, sheltered spot once all risk of spring frost has safely passed.
- Water the base of the plants generously and consistently, and lift the inflating fruits onto a piece of wood or slate to keep them dry and clear of the damp soil as they ripen to a rich orange.
