Cultivate a true exhibition heavyweight and challenge the scales with the world's ultimate giant pumpkin.

The undisputed king of competitive vegetable growing, belonging to the robust pumpkin family. Famously featured in Mr Fothergill's staff trials for its legendary, rapid-growing genetics, Atlantic Giant is the premier choice for growing record-breaking, monstrously large orange fruits, while still offering delicious, sweet flesh that is excellent for comforting autumn kitchen bakes.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Cucurbita maxima (traditionally categorized under the giant squash/pumpkin complex), the definitive record-holding giant pumpkin strain.
  • The Ultimate Record Breaker: Specifically bred for competitive exhibition growing; with dedicated care, feeding, and vine-management, individual fruits can grow to astronomical weights.
  • Delicious Culinary Flesh: Beyond its spectacular novelty appeal on the show bench, the thick, bright orange flesh inside is remarkably sweet and flavorful, making it perfect for hearty autumn pies, roasted side dishes, and velvety soups.
  • Vigorous Sprawling Vines: Produces exceptionally robust, fast-growing vines with large, architectural green leaves that act as a massive solar panel, pumping nutrients directly into the developing fruit.
  • Proven Heavyweight Genetics: The exact variety used in Mr Fothergill's famous staff trials, where individual plants fought off intense competition to produce massive, prize-winning specimens.
  • Nutrient-Dense Harvest: Provides a highly rewarding homegrown crop that serves as an excellent, health-boosting source of essential dietary nutrients, particularly vitamin A.

Care Instructions:

  • Sow seeds indoors from mid to late spring on their edges in individual 9cm pots of moist compost at a depth of 2.5cm, maintaining a warm temperature of 20–25°C for quick germination.
  • Plant out into their final outdoor positions in late spring or early summer once the risk of frost has passed, ensuring they are placed in highly fertile, well-manured soil in a warm, sheltered spot with full sun.
  • To grow a true competition giant, restrict each vine to just one single, well-shaped pumpkin, pinch out competing side shoots, water copiously at the base, and feed heavily with a high-potash fertilizer as the fruit inflates.
