Illuminate your garden with a glowing, satiny canvas of large, cup-shaped citrus blooms.
A highly rewarding, short-lived hardy perennial belonging to the elegant Papaver nudicaule family. Often grown as a biennial or hardy annual, this upright variety reaches a neat height of 45cm, producing a continuous succession of large, crinkled flowers in an array of exceptionally bright, luminous shades that add classic cottage charm to borders and patio containers alike.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Papaver nudicaule, a cold-hardy, exceptionally free-flowering perennial poppy.
- Vibrant Citrus Palette: Features a stunningly cheerful mix of large, crinkled, tissue-paper blooms in glowing shades of lemon yellow, fiery orange, crisp white, and soft apricot pink.
- Neat Upright Profile: Grows with a compact, basal rosette of downy green foliage, throwing up slender, leafless stems to a height of 45cm (18in) that dance gracefully in the summer breeze.
- Outstanding Container Versatility: Due to its compact, tidy footprint, this variety adapts beautifully to life in pots, tubs, and window boxes, bringing a heavy burst of seasonal colour to patios and small balconies.
- Premium Cut Flower Asset: Unlike many other poppy varieties, Iceland Poppies make excellent cut flowers; harvest them just as the buds are beginning to split open and sear the stem ends in boiling water for a long-lasting vase display.
- Sun-Loving & Easy to Grow: Performs at its absolute best when positioned in full sun and well-drained soil, making it a low-maintenance favorite for both novice and experienced gardeners.
Care Instructions:
- Sow seeds indoors from late winter to late spring, or outdoors in late summer for a spectacular early display the following year. Surface sow onto a fine, moist seed compost and press down gently; do not cover the seeds, as they require light to germinate.
- If starting indoors, grow on in cool, bright conditions and prick out early into individual deep pots or plug trays, as these poppies resent root disturbance when transplanting.
- Plant out into their final positions in full sun and fertile, free-draining soil once the young plants are well established, taking care not to disturb the root ball.
