Infuse your garden with a romantic, watercolor wash of unique, double-ruffled heirloom blooms.
A breathtakingly elegant and whimsical hardy annual belonging to the beloved Papaver rhoeas family. Reaching a graceful height of 60cm, Dawn Chorus stands out for its spectacular, tissue-paper double flowers that bloom in an array of highly unusual, soft, and captivating shades, bringing an enchanting cottage-garden charm to sun-drenched borders.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Papaver rhoeas, a refined, heavily petalled selection of the classic annual field poppy.
- Ruffled Double Blooms: Produces a stunning profusion of full, multi-petalled double flowers with delicate, crinkled edges that create a soft, romantic, and airy texture in the garden.
- Unusual Pastel & Smoky Tones: Features a uniquely artistic colour palette, shifting away from standard bright reds into an array of rare smoky shades, soft muted pastels, delicate apricots, and multi-toned bi-colours.
- Graceful Upright Habit: Reaches a perfectly balanced height of 60cm (2ft) on slender yet strong stems, allowing the eye-catching blooms to bob elegantly in the breeze above a backdrop of green foliage.
- The Ultimate Cottage Border Filler: Ideal for weaving into traditional cottage borders, broadcast sowing in naturalized drifts, or using as a whimsical gap-filler in mixed flower beds.
- Sun-Loving & Pollinator Friendly: Thrives beautifully in full sun, where the open, pollen-rich centers of the semi-double blooms act as a welcome feeding station for bees and other beneficial garden pollinators.
Care Instructions:
- Sow seeds directly outdoors where they are to flower from spring to early summer. Prepare the soil by raking it to a fine tilth, scatter the seeds thinly on the surface, and press down gently (do not cover, as poppy seeds need light to germinate).
- Keep the seedbed consistently moist until germination is complete. Once the young seedlings appear, thin them out to roughly 15–20cm apart to prevent overcrowding and encourage strong stem development.
- Deadhead the faded flowers regularly to prolong the blooming season, or allow a few late-summer seed heads to mature and shake out naturally to self-seed a free display for the following year.
