Fill your summer borders with a long-lasting explosion of vibrant, bell-shaped exotic blooms.

A fast-growing and exceptionally rewarding hardy perennial belonging to the elegant Penstemon genus. Flowering beautifully in its very first year from an early sowing, this upright variety reaches a stately height of 75cm, producing a continuous succession of rich, multi-toned flower spikes that bring effortless colour to sun-drenched garden spaces.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Penstemon hartwegii, a robust and high-performing hardy perennial native to Mexico.
  • Vibrant Mixed Colourway: Features a stunning, celebratory palette of bright, attractive shades ranging from deep pinks and rich reds to soft purples, often accented with beautiful white throats.
  • Stately Upright Profile: Grows with a neat, medium-tall upright habit to a height of 75cm (30in) and a compact spread of 30cm (12in), creating excellent structural depth in garden beds.
  • First-Year Flowering: Incredibly quick to establish; when sown early in the season, these plants will reliably bloom in year one, behaving like a hardworking annual while returning year after year.
  • Magnet for Pollinators: The large, tubular, bell-like flowers act as a natural haven for wildlife, being highly attractive to native bumblebees and other beneficial garden pollinators.
  • Sun-Loving Border Favorite: Performs at its absolute best when positioned in full sun, making it an ideal choice for low-maintenance cottage garden borders, gravel gardens, and fresh-cut flower displays.

Care Instructions:

  • Sow seeds indoors from mid-winter to early spring on the surface of moist, free-draining seed compost; press lightly into the soil but do not cover, as these seeds require light to germinate.
  • Maintain a warm, bright environment for germination, then prick out the young seedlings into individual pots to grow on in frost-free conditions.
  • Acclimatise the plants gradually to outdoor conditions before planting out into fertile, well-drained soil in a full sun position once the risk of frost has safely passed.
