Grow a true kitchen garden favorite prized for heavy yields and exceptional winter storage.

A legendary, high-yielding heritage variety belonging to the traditional Allium family. Producing large, beautifully uniform globes with a rich, well-rounded flavor, this reliable variety is celebrated by growers everywhere for its outstanding skin quality and excellent keeping characteristics.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Allium cepa, a highly esteemed and traditional maincrop bulbing onion.
  • Rich Bronze Colourway: Develops large, handsome globes wrapped in tough, protective yellow to light brown skins that look beautiful when braided or stored.
  • Excellent Keeping Qualities: Specially prized for its long shelf life, producing firm bulbs that store exceptionally well throughout the winter months to keep your kitchen supplied.
  • Well-Flavoured Flesh: Delivers a robust, well-balanced, and traditional onion flavor that caramelizes beautifully when cooked and adds rich depth to stews, soups, and roasts.
  • Heavy Cropping Profile: Renowned for its reliable, heavy yields, consistently producing large, heavy bulbs that make the most of your allotment or vegetable plot space.
  • Robust and Dependable: A long-standing favorite for UK growing conditions, demonstrating excellent resilience and reliable performance from spring sowing through to autumn harvest.

Care Instructions:

  • Sow seeds indoors in deep modules from late winter to early spring for a reliable head start, or sow directly outdoors into finely prepared, fertile soil in mid-spring.
  • Thin or transplant young seedlings to a final spacing of 10cm to 15cm apart to allow the large globes plenty of room to expand.
  • Water regularly during dry spells in the growing season, then stop watering once the leaves begin to yellow and top over, allowing the bulbs to dry and cure thoroughly in the sun before storing.
