Introduce architectural drama and structural interest to your garden with stately, spiky flower heads.

A striking hardy biennial from the specialist Nature's Helpers range, specifically grown to support native garden wildlife. Reaching an impressive height, these commanding plants produce large cone-shaped heads from July to September, providing crucial year-round visual appeal and vital resources for wildlife.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Dipsacus fullonum, a robust and structural hardy biennial that flowers the year after sowing.
  • Architectural Profile: Features highly dramatic, spiky cone-shaped heads that stand out proudly as a magnificent focal point in any garden layout.
  • Clever Natural Design: Formed with unique stem-clasping leaves that naturally collect and retain water, offering a valuable drinking resource for garden insects.
  • Winter Food Source: The mature seed heads remain sturdy long after the summer ends, serving as an incredibly valuable food source for goldfinches and other wild birds throughout the winter months.
  • Essential Pollinator Support: Exceptionally attractive to bumblebees and butterflies when in bloom, acting as a centerpiece for the pollinator-friendly range.
  • Ideal for Naturalising: Perfect for the back of borders, architectural drifts, low-maintenance wildlife corners, or for drying to create traditional indoor floral arrangements.

Care Instructions:

  • Sow seeds indoors 0.5cm deep into a moist, free-draining seed compost mix, keeping them warm until the seedlings emerge.
  • Prick out and transplant the young seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle safely.
  • Acclimatise the young plants gradually to outdoor conditions before planting out into their final garden position, spacing them 45cm apart to allow plenty of room for mature structural growth.
