An ultra-compact dwarf variety producing an abundance of sweet, crisp pods perfect for little hands.
Introduce children to the unforgettable joy of tasting home-grown veggies with this delightful selection from the Little Gardeners collection. Containing specialized 'Half Pint' dwarf pea seeds, this variety is engineered by nature to stay small, bushy, and manageable. It is the absolute definitive choice for engaging young minds, allowing children to cultivate, pick, and pop sweet, juicy peas straight from the vine.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Pisum sativum 'Half Pint', a highly specialized dwarf cultivar within the garden pea family.
- Plant Class: Hardy Annual, establishing with exceptional speed in spring to deliver quick, high-yielding results that keep children thoroughly entertained.
- The Sweetest Homegrown Treat: Bears a prolific abundance of bright green pods packed with tender, sugary peas. Because supermarket peas lose their natural sugars quickly after harvesting, tasting these freshly picked treats straight from the garden is a magical memory kids never forget.
- Designed for Young Growers: Part of a playful, educational range crafted to get children hands-on with nature. The seeds are large, smooth, and easy for little fingers to count and handle, making the sowing process highly engaging.
- Ultra-Compact Framework: Unlike traditional peas that require towering bamboo structures, Half Pint forms a neat, self-supporting dwarf bush with a controlled spread of just 30cm. It is uniquely suited for growing in small patio beds, balcony troughs, patio containers, and even creative hanging baskets.
- Playful White Blossoms: Before the pea pods arrive, the plant covers itself in pretty, delicate white flowers, helping children understand the fascinating lifecycle of flowering plants.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: Sow seeds outdoors from March to June for a continuous supply of summer pods. Choose a bright, sunny spot. Children can grow them directly in the ground, in raised allotment beds, or in large patio tubs filled with multi-purpose compost.
- Simple Sowing Method: Show children how to poke shallow holes into the soil with their fingers, about 2.5cm deep and spaced 5–10cm apart. Drop one pea seed into each hole, tuck them into bed with a blanket of soil, and water gently with a kid-friendly watering can.
- Moisture & Care: Pea plants are very easy-going but love regular drinks of water, especially when the white flowers appear and the green pods begin to swell. Keep the soil or container compost evenly damp but not muddy.
- Joyful Harvesting: From June to September, guide children to look closely under the green leaves to find the plump, heavy pea pods. Teach them to gently hold the plant stem with one hand and pull the pod with the other, shelling them open immediately for a crunchy, sweet, and highly nutritious garden snack!
