Harvest exceptionally crisp, dark green hearts through the lean winter and early spring months.
An elite, ultra-hardy semi-cos variety engineered to withstand severe frost and damp winter conditions. Producing dense, compact, and highly structured oval hearts that are ready for harvesting as early as March, it bridges the winter salad gap with a sweet, robust flavor and an unbeatable crunch.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Lactuca sativa, a highly acclaimed, traditional winter-hardy romaine strain.
- Plant Class: Ultra-Hardy Salad Vegetable, boasting supreme cold tolerance that allows it to survive freezing conditions for late winter and early spring picking.
- Growth Habit: Forms highly compact, upright semi-cos heads with dense, tightly packed oval hearts, protecting the tender interior from frost damage.
- Texture & Flavour: Delivers a superb, substantial crunch with thick, succulent dark green leaves that carry a rich, sweet, and satisfying flavor completely free of bitterness.
- Extended Season: The ultimate variety for out-of-season self-sufficiency, maturing steadily through the cold months to ensure you have fresh salad greens on the table from March onwards.
- Versatile Cultivation: Thrives beautifully in open ground, raised beds, or under the protection of cloches and cold frames for a slightly earlier and more pristine spring crop.
Care & Growing Instructions:
- Sowing Position: For winter and early spring harvesting, sow seeds from late summer through early autumn directly into well-drained, fertile soil in a sheltered, sunny spot. It can also be sown in early spring for a reliable summer crop.
- Maintenance & Thinning: Keep the soil moist but ensure the ground does not become waterlogged over winter, as good drainage is key to frost survival. Thin young seedlings out to approximately 20–25cm (8–10in) apart to give the dense, oval hearts ample room to fill out.
