A resilient, mildew-resistant butterhead variety producing striking maroon-red leaves with a tender yellow heart.

Introduce reliable heritage quality to your kitchen garden with this high-performance lettuce selection, expertly bred to deliver consistent salad crops. Featuring a beautiful colour contrast and an exceptionally soft texture, Amaze is a reliable performer that stands well in the ground. It is the definitive choice for home growers seeking a steady, continuous supply of sweet, premium-quality salad leaves throughout the summer months.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Lactuca sativa 'Amaze', a premium, highly uniform cultivar within the leafy brassica and salad family.
  • Plant Class: Hardy Annual, establishing with exceptional seedling vigour to rapidly produce a reliable, uniform crop from a spring sowing.
  • Distinctive Bicolour Foliage: Bears a prolific abundance of glossy, intense maroon-red external leaves wrapped around a contrasting bright yellow interior, adding an attractive gourmet look to the dinner plate.
  • Soft Buttery Texture: Produces tightly packed, smooth leaves that boast an exceptionally tender, melting texture with absolutely no bitter notes and a clean appearance free from specking.
  • Advanced Mildew Resistance: Bred with robust modern genetics to feature excellent natural tolerance against downy mildew, ensuring the plants remain healthy, clean, and highly productive during damp summer weather.
  • Successional Harvesting Habit: Specifically selected for staggered cultivation, making it a great choice if you want to sow at 2 to 3 week intervals for a non-stop, continuous summer supply of fresh leaves.
  • Nutritional Value: A rewarding, health-boosting crop to cultivate at home, serving as an excellent natural source of dietary fibre, essential vitamins, and key antioxidants.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Choose a position with rich, moisture-retentive, and well-drained soil. This versatile variety thrives at its absolute best in full sun, but it will also perform reliably in positions with partial shade during the height of summer.
  • Sowing Method: Sow seeds thinly directly outdoors from March to July, planting them 1cm deep in shallow rows spaced 30cm apart. For the earliest crops, seeds can be started indoors in module trays from February and transplanted out after the last frost.
  • Moisture Control: Keep the soil or container compost consistently and evenly moist, particularly during dry summer spells, as regular watering is essential to prevent the tender leaves from scorching or bolting prematurely.
  • Thinning and Harvesting: Thin out the developing young seedlings gradually to leave the strongest plants spaced 25cm apart, using the aromatic trimmings fresh as baby salad leaves. Harvest full heads cleanly by cutting them at the base when they feel firm and well-filled.
