Grow a heavy, dependable harvest of robust and flavorful winter leeks.

A traditional, hard-working variety celebrated for its exceptional cold tolerance and deep, rich flavor. Highly resilient through the frost, it stands beautifully in the winter ground to provide an excellent, homegrown source of vitamin C, iron, and folate when fresh garden greens are at a premium.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Allium porrum, a dependable heritage-style variety trusted for cold-season performance.
  • Plant Class: Hardy Vegetable, built to comfortably withstand severe frost and winter weather for a reliable late-season harvest.
  • Shank Development: Produces thick, sturdy white shanks topped with fan-like, blue-green foliage. The shanks can be easily lengthened by drawing up surrounding soil as they grow.
  • Flavour Profile: Delivers a classic, full-bodied, and robust leek flavour that sweetens beautifully after exposure to winter frosts—perfect for hearty stews, bakes, and potato soups.
  • Nutritional Value: A highly nutritious addition to the winter diet, offering an abundant natural source of essential iron, folate, and Vitamin C.
  • Sowing Flexibility: Highly adaptable for gardeners; can be direct-sown in outdoor seedbeds or started early indoors in modules to get a head start on the season.

Care & Growing Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Sow in early to mid-spring. Once seedlings reach pencil thickness, transplant them into deep, fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny spot, dropping them into individual 15cm (6in) deep holes.
  • Blanching Tip: Draw soil up around the stems ("earthing up") progressively throughout the summer growing season to block out light, which increases the length of the prized, tender white shank.
