A premium, heavy-yielding wax bean variety producing stringless, golden-yellow pods with a sweet flavor.

Bring gourmet flair to your vegetable plot with this exceptional French bean selection. Breaking away from traditional green varieties, Cala D'Or is highly prized for its vibrant yellow pods that boast a significantly sweeter flavor and tender, melt-in-the-mouth texture. Growing on robust, self-supporting dwarf bushes, it is the perfect variety for space-saving garden borders, raised beds, or patio containers.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Phaseolus vulgaris 'Cala D\'Or', an elite, heavy-cropping dwarf wax bean selection within the legume family.
  • Plant Class: Half Hardy Annual, establishing with superior speed and stamina to deliver an early, prolonged, and continuous summer harvest.
  • Gourmet Golden Wax Pods: Bears an abundance of perfectly straight, slender, and entirely stringless pods that mature into a beautiful, eye-catching golden-yellow color. The flesh is exceptionally crisp, fleshy, and sweeter than standard green beans.
  • Excellent Disease Tolerance: Bred with strong modern genetics to feature an excellent natural resistance against common bean diseases and viruses, ensuring the foliage remains healthy, robust, and highly productive all season long.
  • Compact Dwarf Framework: Naturally forms a neat, sturdy, and self-supporting bush framework. Because it requires absolutely no complex climbing poles or netting structures, it is an ideal choice for smaller gardens, allotment foregrounds, raised beds, or large patio tubs.
  • Nutritional Rewards: A fantastic, health-boosting addition to your homegrown dinner plate, serving as an excellent natural source of dietary fiber, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C.
  • Kitchen Versatility: Due to their beautiful golden hue and tender habit, these beans look spectacular when lightly steamed whole, tossed warm with melted butter and herbs, or chopped fresh into crisp summer salads.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Start seeds early indoors from April to May for the surest, most foolproof results. Sow individual seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep into small pots of moist compost and place them on a warm, bright windowsill (15–20°C is ideal). Alternatively, sow directly outdoors from May to July once the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has safely passed. Position in full sun.
  • Planting Out & Spacing: Gradually accustom indoor-raised plants to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days before planting out into their final positions when the spring frosts are completely over. Space individual plants 30cm (1ft) apart, allowing 45cm (18in) between rows to ensure good air circulation.
  • Moisture & Support: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. While these compact bushes do not require tall staking, inserting a few short, twiggy brush sticks around the perimeter helps support the heavy weight of the summer bean crop, keeping the golden pods lifted completely clear of the damp soil.
  • Harvesting Tip: Harvest the pods frequently when they are young, slender, and snap easily in half. Regular picking is essential, as it prevents the plant from shutting down to set seed, forcing it to continuously produce fresh flowers and an ongoing supply of sweet beans until the autumn.
