An ultra-fast, premium 'Kenyan' type dwarf bean delivering heavy crops of slender, pencil-thin pods.

Bring professional-quality "fine beans" to your dinner table with this exceptionally fast-growing F1 hybrid. True to its name, Ferrari establishes with remarkable speed to yield an early and continuous harvest of highly refined, stringless pods. Because it forms a compact, sturdy bush that needs no climbing support, it is an elite selection for space-saving garden borders, raised beds, or patio containers.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Phaseolus vulgaris 'Ferrari', an elite, heavy-cropping dwarf 'filet' bean selection within the legume family.
  • Plant Class: Half Hardy Annual, establishing with superior speed and stamina to deliver an early, rapid summer harvest.
  • Premium Kenyan Pencil Pods: Bears a prolific abundance of beautifully straight, exceptionally dark green pods. These extra-slim, fleshy, and entirely stringless "filet" beans are highly prized for their tender texture and rich, sweet flavor.
  • Superb Disease Resistance: Bred with advanced modern genetics to feature robust natural protection against Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV), Halo Blight, and Anthracnose, ensuring the bush stays healthy and productive.
  • Compact Dwarf Framework: Naturally forms a neat, sturdy, self-supporting bush framework reaching a height of roughly 30–45cm. Because it requires no tall climbing poles, it is ideal for small gardens, raised beds, or large patio pots.
  • Nutritional Powerhouse: A fantastic, health-boosting addition to your homegrown diet, serving as an excellent natural source of dietary fiber, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C.
  • Optimal Position: Thrives at its absolute best when positioned in Full Sun in a warm, sheltered spot with well-drained, fertile soil. (Please note: While some basic charts list "full shade," French beans fundamentally require bright sunlight and warmth to develop flowers and set pods successfully).

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Start seeds early indoors from April to May for the surest, earliest results. Sow individual seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep into small pots of moist compost and place them on a warm, bright windowsill (15–20°C is ideal). Alternatively, sow directly outdoors from May to July once the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has safely passed.
  • Cloche Tip for Early Crops: For an extra-early harvest, young plants can be set out under glass cloches or protective fleece frames in early May, which shields them from chilly spring breezes and accelerates pod development.
  • Planting Out & Spacing: Gradually accustom indoor-raised plants to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days before planting out into their final positions. Space individual plants 30cm (1ft) apart, allowing 45cm (18in) between rows. Growing them in close blocks allows the dense bushes to lean on and support one another.
  • Moisture & Pod Setting: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. In exceptionally hot, dry summer weather, gently misting the open flowers with tepid water in the evening will dramatically help the flowers pollinate and form crisp bean pods.
  • Harvesting Tip: Use kitchen scissors to harvest the pods frequently while they are young, pencil-thin, and snap easily. Regular picking is vital, as it prevents the plant from shutting down to set seed, forcing it to continuously produce fresh flowers and an ongoing supply of fine beans until October.
