A majestic, architectural perennial delivering towering spikes of opulent blooms for an unforgettable back-of-border display.

Command absolute attention in your summer garden with the ultimate cottage garden classic. Globally renowned for their jaw-dropping stature and intense color depth, the Pacific Giants strain produces colossal, closely packed spires of magnificent flowers that return to grace your garden year after year. It stands as the definitive choice for injecting dramatic vertical structure and a rich palette of hues into sun-drenched perennial borders.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Delphinium x cultorum 'Pacific Giants Mixed', an elite, highly celebrated large-flowered strain within the genus.
  • Plant Class: Hardy Perennial, establishing a permanent, heavy-duty rootstock that returns with increased size, vigor, and flower power every single year.
  • Towering Architectural Structure: Naturally develops an incredibly tall, stately, and upright framework that can reach a breathtaking mature height of 210cm (84in / 7ft). It provides an unmatched structural anchor when planted at the back of traditional borders or cutting patches.
  • Opulent Jewel-Toned Spires: Bears massive, densely packed flower spikes clad in large, often semi-double blooms. The premium color mix spans from pristine pure whites and soft pastel pinks to glowing sky blues, intense gentian blues, deep mauves, and rich, velvety violets—many accented with contrasting central "bees" (the flower centers).
  • Elite Professional Cut Flower: Widely considered the holy grail for summer floral arrangements; the rigid, hollow stems and durable, multi-layered flowers create dramatic, show-stopping indoor vase displays.
  • Wildlife Magnet: The large, nectar-rich vertical spires act as a prominent visual beacon, drawing bumblebees, honeybees, and butterflies into your garden from early summer onwards.
  • Optimal Position: Thrives at its absolute best when positioned in Full Sun, requiring a fertile, deep, and well-drained soil that is highly enriched with organic matter.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Start seeds indoors from February to May for flowers the following year (or occasionally late in their first autumn if sown extra early). Sow seeds 3mm deep in pots or trays of moist, good quality seed compost. Keep the compost damp and maintain a steady temperature of 15–18°C. For an extra boost, place the seed packet in the fridge for 2–3 weeks prior to sowing to mimic winter and break seed dormancy.
  • Growing On & Transplanting: Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into individual 7.5cm pots. Grow them on in cooler, bright, frost-free conditions, hardening them off gradually before planting them out into their final flowering positions in late spring or autumn. Space individual plants roughly 60–75cm apart.
  • Moisture, Nutrition & Staking: Delphiniums are incredibly hungry and thirsty plants. Incorporate a massive amount of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the planting area. Because these giants reach over 2 meters tall, it is absolutely essential to support the stems with sturdy bamboo canes or a ring frame early in the spring, well before the heavy flower spikes emerge. Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry summer spells.
  • Pruning & Second Flush: Once the primary flower spikes fade in mid-summer, cut them down cleanly to ground level and feed the plant heavily with a balanced liquid fertilizer. This stimulates the rootstock into pushing up a fresh, highly rewarding second flush of smaller flower spikes in late summer and early autumn.
