A spectacular cottage garden tapestry of fully double blooms on stately, long stems.
Bring the charm of a traditional British meadow into your garden borders with this effortless, high-impact hardy annual. Showcasing an elegant, harmonized blend of double-petalled blossoms on tall, upright stems, this classic mix is a breeze to grow, makes an outstanding cut flower, and serves as an oasis for local wildlife.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Centaurea cyanus, a premium and wonderfully diverse selection within the Cornflower genus.
- Plant Class: Hardy Annual, growing rapidly from seed to establish a full, heavy-flowering display within a single season.
- Rich Multi-Colour Mix: Delivers a beautiful, balanced spectrum of traditional cottage garden shades, including the iconic true-blue, soft pinks, deep crimsons, delicate lavenders, and crisp whites.
- Fully Double Blooms: Features large, intricate, ruffled double flower heads that sit proudly atop long, slender, yet remarkably resilient stems.
- Stately Back-Border Presence: Displays a tall, upright, and bushy growth habit, reaching an impressive mature height of 90cm (36in) that is perfect for adding height and fluid texture behind shorter bedding plants.
- Premium Cut Flower Variety: Specifically bred with long, straight stems, making it an absolute favorite for harvesting and arranging into large, rustic, fresh summer bouquets.
- Pollinator Haven: The nectar-rich flower heads act as a major natural fuel source, keeping your garden buzzing with life by attracting a wide array of bumblebees, honeybees, and butterflies.
- Tough & Adaptable: Highly versatile and undemanding; it performs beautifully across a wide range of soil types and is perfectly suited for both partial shade and full sun positions.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: Sow seeds thinly directly outdoors from March to May into finely raked, weed-free, and well-drained soil where they are to bloom. Alternatively, sow in September to achieve sturdier plants and extra-early flowers the following spring. Position in partial shade or full sun.
- Thinning & Spacing: Once the seedlings emerge, thin them out gradually to about 20–25cm apart. This ensures each plant has ample space to develop a strong, bushy root and stem architecture.
- Support & Maintenance: Due to their impressive 90cm height, tall cornflowers grown in exposed or windy sites will benefit from a small amount of support using brushwood or subtle staking. Deadhead faded blooms regularly to stimulate non-stop flower production all summer long.
