A spectacular blend of fiery, multi-coloured foliage to illuminate shady borders and indoor spaces.

Introduce a dazzling display of rich, velvet-textured leaves with this exceptional foliage favourite. Specially curated for its intense, high-contrast colour patterns, Flame Dancers brings effortless, season-long colour to shaded patio containers, bedding schemes, or bright windowsills indoors.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Solenostemon scutellarioides (also classified as Plectranthus scutellarioides), a highly prized ornamental member of the mint family.
  • Plant Class: Half Hardy Perennial, most frequently treated as a Half Hardy Annual (HHA) for outdoor summer bedding, or grown permanently indoors as a vibrant houseplant.
  • Fabulous Foliage Palette: Produces a mesmerizing mix of heavily patterned leaves in rich shades of crimson, electric pink, bronze, gold, and lime green.
  • Shade Illuminator: Provides a reliable alternative to flowering plants for low-light areas, adding immediate, dramatic structural colour to tricky, partially shaded garden borders.
  • Growth Habit & Size: Displays a neat, uniform, and bushy medium ground-cover habit, reaching a manageable mature height of 30cm (12in).
  • Sow Anytime Indoors: Offers complete growing flexibility; while spring sowing is ideal for summer gardens, seeds can be started at any time of year to produce striking, colourful indoor pot plants.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Sow seeds indoors in pots or trays of fine, moist compost. Press the tiny seeds gently onto the surface but do not cover them, as they require light to trigger germination. Keep in a warm, bright spot out of direct, scorching sunlight.
  • Planting Out: For outdoor displays, harden off the young plants gradually before transplanting them into rich, well-drained soil after all danger of spring frost has safely passed. Position in partial shade to maintain the brightest leaf colours.
  • Maintenance: Pinch out the growing tips of young plants regularly to encourage a much bushier, sturdier growth habit. Snip off any small, flower spikes as they appear to keep the plant's energy focused entirely on producing its magnificent foliage.
