A vibrant, structural hardy annual showcasing intense, long-lasting violet-blue bracts.
Introduce a striking vertical element and an abundance of rich colour to your summer displays with this effortless annual sage. Famed for its exceptionally large, deep purple-blue veined bracts that hold their colour all season, it is a magnificent addition to cottage gardens, informal borders, and home cut flower arrangements.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Salvia viridis 'Blue Monday' (Syn. Salvia horminum), a premier and highly ornamental member of the sage family. *(Note: Often confused with Clarkia, this plant is an authentic annual Clary).*
- Plant Class: Hardy Annual, establishing with exceptional speed from spring sowings to deliver an extended flowering window from June right through to October.
- Spectacular Blue Bracts: Features terminal spikes of small flowers wrapped in large, intensely colourful, and clearly veined indigo-blue bracts that provide a non-stop wash of summer colour.
- Premium Cut & Dried Flower: Highly prized for structural floral design; the sturdy stems last beautifully in a fresh vase arrangement and retain their brilliant violet-blue pigment perfectly when dried for permanent winter displays.
- Growth Habit & Size: Displays a neat, upright, and multi-branched columnar habit, reaching a mature height of up to 45cm (18in) and a spread of 30cm (12in).
- Pollinator Heaven: Rich in accessible pollen and nectar, these striking flower spikes act as a natural magnet for bumblebees, honeybees, and other beneficial garden insects.
- Low Maintenance: An incredibly reliable and forgiving plant that is relatively pest and disease-free, blending effortlessly into mixed beds or large patio containers.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: Sow seeds thinly directly outdoors from March to May into finely raked, weed-free soil where they are to flower. Choose an open, bright location in full sun. Alternatively, start earlier under glass in seed trays.
- Spacing: Once outdoor seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to around 20–30cm apart to give each clump sufficient space to spread and to optimize airflow.
- Maintenance: Cut back faded flower spikes regularly throughout the summer to encourage a continuous succession of fresh, colourful new shoots and prevent unwanted self-seeding.
