Bring the authentic taste of a Spanish tapas bar home with the legendary 'Russian Roulette' pepper.
The world-famous heirloom variety belonging to the prolific Capsicum family, traditionally known as 'Pimientos de Padrón'. Celebrated as a gourmet specialty of the town of Padrón in Galicia, Spain, this unique pepper produces heavy crops of mild green fruits with a famous twist—roughly one in every ten peppers packs a surprise fiery kick!
Details:
- Botanical Name: Capsicum annuum, a traditional, high-yielding Spanish heirloom tapas pepper.
- The Famous Tapas Classic: The definitive pepper used for the classic Spanish dish—simply blister them whole in a hot pan with olive oil and a heavy scattering of coarse sea salt.
- The 'Russian Roulette' Chilli: Most of the fruits are harvested young when they are mild, sweet, and savoury, but a small percentage naturally develop a punchy, unexpected level of heat.
- Grown for Green Harvesting: Typically harvested when roughly 3cm to 5cm long and still a deep, glossy green, though they will eventually mature to a bright red if left on the vine.
- Excellent Protected Performance: While these robust plants yield their earliest, heaviest, and most prolific crops when grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel, they adapt beautifully to sheltered, sun-baked outdoor spots.
- Bushy & Productive Habit: Develops a strong, branched framework that performs exceptionally well in large patio pots, allotments, or dedicated vegetable beds.
Care Instructions:
- Sow seeds indoors from late winter to mid-spring in trays of moist seed compost, maintaining a constant temperature of 20–25°C in a propagator for quick, uniform germination.
- Prick out the young seedlings into individual pots once they are large enough to handle, growing them on in bright, warm, and frost-free conditions.
- Transplant to final pots or greenhouse borders in full sun. Pick the fruits frequently while they are young and green to encourage the plant to continuously produce new flowers and peppers all summer long.
