A classic, stump-rooted favorite delivering crisp textures, sweet flavors, and minimal cores.
Cultivate a true kitchen garden masterpiece with this highly popular, heavy-cropping Chantenay strain. Renowned for its distinctive wedge shape and vibrant coloration, Chantenay Red Cored 2 is a robust, reliable performer that excels even in heavy, shallow, or slightly stony soils where longer varieties struggle. It yields an abundance of sweet, crunchy carrots with a virtually unnoticeable core, making them an absolute joy to prepare and eat.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Daucus carota 'Chantenay Red Cored 2', an elite, highly refined stump-rooted maincrop selection within the Carrot family.
- Plant Class: Hardy Annual, establishing with excellent natural vigour to provide early crops or highly dependable maincrop harvests.
- Premium Stump-Rooted Shape: Produces short, broad, and wedge-shaped roots that taper to a neat, blunt end. Because they do not push deeply into the ground, this variety is the definitive choice for gardeners dealing with heavy clay, shallow allotments, or deep patio containers.
- Exquisite Flavour & Minimal Core: Features a stunning, deep reddish-orange colour right the way through to its center. The interior core is exceptionally small and tender, eliminating the tough, woody texture found in lesser varieties. It boasts a rich, sweet, traditional carrot flavor.
- Sow Little and Often: This variety responds spectacularly to successional sowing, allowing you to easily maintain a non-stop, continuous supply of fresh, kitchen-ready roots from early summer right through to late autumn.
- Excellent Kitchen Versatility: The perfect all-rounder for home cooks; delicious when eaten raw and crunchy as a snack, sliced into stews, or roasted whole with honey and herbs to unlock their natural sugars.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: For a continuous, fresh harvest, sow small successional batches every 2 to 3 weeks from March through to July. Sow seeds thinly directly into a finely raked, weed-free, and well-drained bed 1cm deep, in rows spaced 15–20cm apart. Position in full sun.
- Soil Preparation Note: While Chantenay types handle difficult soils better than long carrots, they still prefer a loose bed. Avoid adding fresh manure or fertiliser to the soil immediately before sowing, as this can cause the roots to "fork" or split.
- Thinning & Carrot Fly Prevention: To avoid attracting the destructive Carrot Rocket Fly, thin out young seedlings late in the evening when the flies are inactive. Aim for a final spacing of 5–7cm between plants. Always crush and bury the discarded thinnings immediately to mask the aromatic carrot scent.
- Moisture & Care: Keep the soil evenly and consistently moist. While carrots are relatively self-sufficient, uneven watering (dry spells followed by heavy drenching) can cause the expanding roots to split open. Keep the rows well-weeded to reduce competition for nutrients.
