An award-winning, compact variety engineered to deliver heavy crops of well-filled pods in exposed, windy locations.

Introduce outstanding resilience to your vegetable plot with this premium selection. Celebrated with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its absolute reliability and superior garden performance, Statissa is a robust, short-podded variety designed specifically to withstand challenging weather. It stands as the definitive choice for small gardens, allotment borders, and patio containers where space is at a premium.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Vicia faba 'Statissa', a highly refined, premium-grade cultivar within the legume family.
  • Plant Class: Hardy Annual, establishing with exceptional seedling vigour to rapidly produce a reliable, early-summer harvest from a spring sowing.
  • Compact, Robust Framework: Naturally forms a sturdy, low-growing bush structure that offers maximum resistance to wind damage, eliminating the need for complex staking, netting, or tall bamboo support frames.
  • Well-Filled Short Pods: Bears a prolific abundance of thick, tightly packed short pods, each containing multiple plump, tender beans with a rich, traditional broad bean flavour.
  • Growing Versatility: Due to its compact and manageable habit, it is an elite choice for exposed windy plots, smaller kitchen gardens, raised beds, or deep patio containers.
  • Nutritional Value: A rewarding, health-boosting crop to cultivate at home, serving as an excellent natural source of plant-based protein, dietary fibre, and essential vitamins.

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Choose a position with rich, moisture-retentive, and well-drained soil in full sun, though its robust nature allows it to succeed in more exposed sites than taller varieties.
  • Sowing Method: Sow seeds thinly directly outdoors from February to April for an early summer harvest. Place the seeds 5cm deep in rows spaced 20cm apart, allowing 45cm between rows, and firm the soil down gently before watering deeply.
  • Moisture & Maintenance: Keep the soil or container compost consistently moist, particularly when the plants are flowering and setting pods, as regular watering is essential to prevent the crop from dropping.
  • Pest Control & Harvesting: Pinch out the top 10cm growing tip of each stem once the first pods begin to form at the base, as this traditional technique redirects energy to the developing beans and helps deter blackfly. Harvest the pods regularly when they are plump and snap cleanly.
