Stunning candy-striped roots for a unique culinary display.
Bring a touch of Italian heritage to your table with this striking variety, famous for its concentric red and white rings and mild, sweet flavour.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Beta vulgaris, a traditional Italian heirloom variety from the town of Chioggia.
- Visual Appeal: Features beautiful, alternating rings of deep red and bright white flesh, perfect for adding visual interest to fresh summer salads.
- Flavour Profile: Offers a notably mild and sweet taste compared to traditional varieties, with less of the heavy earthiness associated with standard beetroot.
- Culinary Versatility: While the rings are most prominent when sliced raw, the roots transform into a delicate, uniform pink when cooked.
- Nutritional Value: A fantastic homegrown source of dietary fibre and essential nutrients, maintaining a healthy addition to your vegetable plot.
- Reliable Growth: A productive and hardy variety that establishes quickly, making it a rewarding choice for gardens, allotments, or raised beds.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing: Sow seeds thinly outdoors from March to July in well-prepared, stone-free soil. Sow at a depth of 1cm in drills spaced 30cm apart.
- Thinning: Once seedlings appear, thin them to approximately 10cm apart to allow the globe-shaped roots sufficient room to expand.
- Watering: Maintain regular and consistent moisture levels, particularly during dry spells, to prevent the roots from becoming woody or tough.
- Soil Preference: Thrives in a sunny position in fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid freshly manured ground to ensure smooth, uniform root development.
- Harvesting: Pull individual roots as required from June to October. For the most tender texture and vibrant colour, harvest when the roots are roughly the size of a golf ball.
