The gold standard for early sowing with exceptional bolt resistance.
Widely acclaimed by garden experts, this reliable globe variety produces tender, deep red roots with a superb sweet flavour and smooth texture.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Beta vulgaris, a time-tested multigerm variety favoured for its consistency.
- Bolt Resistance: Specifically bred to resist "bolting" (running to seed), allowing for much earlier sowing than traditional varieties.
- Expert Recommendation: Endorsed by Rachel de Thame in BBC Gardeners' World Magazine as a "real favourite," and highly recommended by Charles Dowding and Matt Biggs.
- Industry Recognition: Consistently rated as a "Best Buy" variety by the Gardening Press and independent Consumer Groups.
- Culinary Quality: Renowned for its fine skin, internal ringless deep red colour, and a sweet, earthy flavour that is excellent for both roasting and pickling.
- Nutritional Value: A rich source of dietary fibre and antioxidants, providing a healthy and versatile addition to the kitchen garden.
- Growing Versatility: Perfect for traditional vegetable plots, raised beds, or even deep containers.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing: For the earliest crops, sow under cloches from mid-March. Maincrop sowings can be made outdoors from April through to July.
- Depth & Spacing: Sow seeds 1cm deep in drills spaced 30cm apart. Beetroot seeds are "multigerm," meaning each seed pod can produce several seedlings.
- Thinning: Once seedlings appear, thin them to 10cm apart to allow the globe roots sufficient room to expand.
- Soil Preference: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Avoid freshly manured ground to prevent the roots from forking.
- Watering: Maintain consistent moisture levels during dry spells to ensure the roots remain tender and do not become woody.
- Harvesting: Pull individual roots as required from June to October. Harvest when they reach the size of a golf ball for the best flavour.
