A high-performance F1 hybrid boasting exceptional sugar levels and smooth, deep crimson roots.
Indulge in gourmet sweetness with a modern hybrid that sets the benchmark for flavor. Bettolo F1 is highly celebrated for its remarkably high natural sugar content, producing round, smooth roots that are deliciously sweet and entirely free from tough, woody rings. It stands as a reliable, premium-quality performer that excels whether picked early as tender baby beets or left to reach full maturity.
Details:
- Botanical Name: Beta vulgaris 'Bettolo F1', an elite, flavour-optimised hybrid cultivar within the Beetroot family.
- Plant Class: Hardy Annual, possessing superior hybrid vigor for uniform root development and excellent early-season stamina.
- Superbly Sweet Flavour: Engineered by nature to develop high concentrations of natural sugars. The smooth, deep red interior flesh offers a rich, sweet, and melting texture that is sensational whether roasted, steamed, pickled, or grated raw into summer slaws.
- Flexible Harvesting Dual-Crop: Highly versatile in the kitchen; harvest the globes early when they reach golf-ball size for ultra-tender baby beets, or let them mature into full-sized, heavy maincrop roots without any loss of sweetness or texture.
- Multigerm Seed Strain: This is a traditional multigerm variety, meaning each seed cluster naturally produces a small group of seedlings. This cluster-growth habit makes it exceptionally easy to grow in small, space-saving "clumps" for high-density yields.
- Excellent Visual Appeal: Produces neat, upright, rich green top foliage with striking red veins. The young leaves can be snipped early and tossed into fresh salads as a beautiful, iron-rich alternative to spinach.
- Compact & Reliable: Naturally forms a tidy, upright, clump-forming habit with a controlled spread of 30cm, making it an elite selection for traditional vegetable plots, raised allotment beds, or deep patio tubs.
Care Instructions:
- Sowing Position: For a continuous, fresh supply of sweet beets all season long, sow small successional batches every 2 to 3 weeks from March through to July. Sow seeds thinly directly into finely raked, weed-free, and well-drained soil 2cm deep, in rows spaced 30cm apart. Position in full sun.
- Thinning for Clump Growing: Because Bettolo is a multigerm variety, the seeds will sprout in small clusters. For traditional large single roots, thin the seedlings gradually to space them 10cm apart. Alternatively, for high-density "clump growing," simply thin the clusters down to the strongest 3–4 seedlings and let them grow together, harvesting the roots as they push each other apart.
- Moisture & Care: Beetroot requires a steady, consistent supply of moisture to prevent the roots from turning tough or woody. Water regularly and deeply during dry summer spells. Keep the rows well-weeded to prevent competition for valuable nutrients.
- Harvesting Tip: Pull alternative roots early, about 10–12 weeks after sowing, to enjoy as premium baby beets. When harvesting mature beets in autumn, always twist the leafy tops off by hand rather than cutting them with a knife; twisting seals the crown and prevents the roots from "bleeding" their vibrant colour and sweet sugars during cooking.
