A classic, high-yielding garden favorite delivering exceptionally succulent, near-stringless pods.

Enjoy an abundant harvest of premium-quality green beans with this highly reliable, low-maintenance heirloom variety. True to its name, Tendergreen is celebrated for its juicy, fleshy pods that boast a wonderful crunch and rich, traditional flavor. Growing on compact, self-supporting bushes, it is the perfect space-saving choice for raised beds, allotments, and patio containers.

Details:

  • Botanical Name: Phaseolus vulgaris 'Tendergreen', a time-tested, high-performance cultivar within the Dwarf French Bean family.
  • Plant Class: Half Hardy Annual, establishing rapidly in spring to provide a heavy, prolonged crop of delicious summer vegetables.
  • Succulent, Near-Stringless Pods: Bears a prolific abundance of smooth, rounded, dark green pods. Exceptionally tender and meaty, they remain stringless for an extended period, making kitchen preparation quick and effortless.
  • Compact & Tidy Bush Habit: Naturally forms a neat, sturdy, and self-supporting mound framework. Because it requires absolutely no tall climbing poles, frames, or netting, it is an ideal choice for smaller garden spaces, raised beds, or large patio tubs.
  • Nutritional Superfood: A fantastic, health-boosting addition to your homegrown dinner plate. It stands out as an excellent, nutrient-dense source of folate, iron, magnesium, and dietary fiber.
  • Excellent Kitchen Versatility: Due to their superb texture and sweet taste, these beans are delightful when lightly steamed, sautéed with garlic, or sliced fresh into vibrant summer salads.
  • Optimal Position: Thrives at its absolute best when positioned in Full Sun in a warm, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil. (Please note: While basic data charts occasionally list "full shade," French beans are sun-loving plants that fundamentally require bright, direct sunlight and warmth to flower and set pods successfully).

Care Instructions:

  • Sowing Position: Start seeds early indoors from April to May for the surest, earliest results. Sow individual seeds 2.5–5cm deep into small pots of moist compost and place them on a warm, bright windowsill. Alternatively, sow directly outdoors from May to July once the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has safely passed.
  • Planting Out & Spacing: Gradually accustom indoor-raised plants to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days before planting out when the spring frosts are completely over. Space individual plants 15–20cm apart, leaving 45cm between rows. Growing them in close blocks allows the dense bushes to lean on and support one another.
  • Moisture & Pod Setting: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Beans require plenty of water once they begin flowering. In exceptionally hot, dry summer weather, gently misting the open blossoms with tepid water in the evening will dramatically assist pollination and help the pods set.
  • Harvesting Tip: Harvest the pods frequently when they are young, crisp, and roughly 10–15cm long before the seeds inside begin to swell. Regular picking is vital, as it prevents the plant from shutting down to set seed, forcing it to continuously produce fresh flowers and an ongoing supply of delicious beans until autumn.
